Southern Medical University

Southern Medical University (SMU), located in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, is a public medical university originally founded as the First Military Medical University of the PLA in 1951. It was designated a national key university in 1979 and transferred to the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province in 2004, when it was renamed SMU.

Today, SMU is the only medical university among the first group of high-level universities selected for key development by Guangdong Province. It is co-constructed by the Ministry of Education, the National Health Commission, and the Guangdong Provincial Government. The university has campuses in Guangzhou and Shunde (Foshan), with 13 directly affiliated hospitals including Nanfang Hospital and Zhujiang Hospital.

SMU covers eight major academic fields: medicine, engineering, science, law, management, literature, education, and economics, and it consists of 16 schools and six affiliated hospitals.

    The Clinical Medical Innovation Center at the Shenzhen Hospital, approved by the Shenzhen Development and Reform Commission, serves as a comprehensive research platform integrating basic research, translational medicine, and precision medicine. It consists of departments for basic experiments, translational medicine, precision medicine, and animal testing, and includes labs such as GMP cell culture rooms, flow cytometry rooms, histology labs, and microscopy labs.

    SMU boasts strong research capabilities. It is home to national-level platforms such as the National Key Laboratory for Organ Failure Prevention and Treatment, National Clinical Research Center, and the National Chronic Kidney Disease Clinical Research Center. In the ESI global rankings, 15 disciplines including clinical medicine, basic medicine, pharmacology, and toxicology rank in the global top 1%, with clinical medicine and pharmacology/toxicology in the top 0.05%.
