Shenzhen University
Shenzhen University (SZU), founded in 1983 with approval from the Ministry of Education, is a comprehensive university with strong academic and research capabilities. It comprises 28 schools covering disciplines such as philosophy, literature, economics, law, education, science, engineering, management, medicine, history, arts, and agriculture. SZU offers 104 undergraduate majors and 3 Sino-foreign cooperative programs. The university has 22 first-level disciplines authorized for academic doctoral degrees, 4 for professional doctorates, 40 for academic master’s degrees, and 32 for professional master’s degrees.
Innovative Laboratories
SZU hosts several key laboratories and research centers that support both teaching and innovation. The Greater Bay Area Innovation Design Lab focuses on spatial studies and design related to urbanization issues in the GBA and beyond. It fosters cross-disciplinary and design-oriented research for spatial innovation and problem-solving.
The Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Digital Creative Technology develops platforms for digital content processing, enhancement, and distribution. These platforms work closely with industry partners to promote the growth of the digital creative sector.
Another notable initiative is the Laboratory for Cultural Digitization and Innovation, which has created a Cultural Digital Twin Platform. This integrates advanced technologies such as big data and digital twins to accelerate the digital transformation of the cultural industry.
Research Strengths
SZU has seen rapid growth in research capabilities. It now operates 10 national-level research platforms, 46 at the provincial-ministerial level, and 84 at the municipal level—ranking first in Shenzhen in both total platforms and high-level research infrastructures.
Its disciplines such as engineering, materials science, computer science, and chemistry rank in the top 0.1% globally according to ESI.

2) Digital Creativity and Cultural Industry: Labs and platforms focused on digital creativity and digital twin technologies for cultural transformation.
3) Urban Planning and Architectural Design: GBA Innovation Design Lab supports interdisciplinary research and urban spatial innovation.
4) Biomedicine and Health Engineering: Biomedical Engineering Innovation Lab advances research in biosensors, medical devices, and related fields.
